OG image checker.
Check any URL's Open Graph and Twitter card tags, see what is missing, and copy the exact tags to add.
Check why a link preview looks wrong
When you share a link in a chat or a post, the platform does not show your page. It shows a
card built from a few tags in the page's HTML: og:title,
og:description, og:image and the twitter: tags. If the
tags are missing, the image is too large or in the wrong shape, or the platform kept an old
copy, the card comes out blank, cropped or out of date. This free OG image checker and
Twitter card validator shows exactly what a crawler found on your URL, without an account.
Paste the address of any public page and you get a score out of 100, the tags as they were
read, the image file's size and format, and a preview of the card on iMessage, X, Facebook,
LinkedIn, Slack and Discord. Every problem is listed as an error or a warning with the fix
beside it, so you can correct the page, run the check again and share with confidence.
What the checker tests
Enter a public URL and the checker reads the page the way a link-unfurling crawler does:
the og: and twitter: tags in the HTML, then the
og:image file itself. You get a score out of 100 and a list of findings, each
marked as an error or a warning.
- Title and description: present, and a length that is not cut off in a card.
- Image: reachable, a readable PNG, JPEG, GIF or WebP, about 1200×630, under 300 KB, served over https.
- Twitter card:
twitter:cardset tosummary_large_image, so X shows the large image. - Canonical and
og:url: present, so shares of one page count as one. - Response: https, no long redirect chain, not so slow that a crawler gives up.
Fixing the common findings
- Missing og:image. Add
<meta property="og:image" content="https://yoursite.com/og.png">to the page's<head>. The URL must be absolute. - Wrong size or too heavy. Export 1200×630 and compress to under 300 KB; WhatsApp is reported to drop larger previews.
- No Twitter card. Add
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">. X falls back to yourog:tags for the rest. - Old image still showing. The platform cached it. See og:image not showing for the per-platform fix.
- Tags missing or unsure how to write them. Fill in the meta tag generator and paste the finished
<head>block. - No image at all yet. Make one with the free OG image generator or the editor, or render one per page from a URL with the API.
Questions
What does the OG image checker look at?
It fetches the URL you enter, reads the og: and twitter: meta tags in the HTML, then requests the og:image itself. It reports missing or badly sized tags, an unreadable or oversized image (over 300 KB), an image that is not about 1200x630, non-https URLs, a missing canonical link, and slow responses, then scores the page out of 100.
Is this a Twitter card validator?
It checks the tags X reads: twitter:card, twitter:title, twitter:description and twitter:image, with a fallback to the og: tags where X falls back. X retired its own public Card Validator in 2022, so this shows a preview of how the card renders rather than asking X to re-scrape the page.
Why does the checker show an image but Slack or LinkedIn still shows an old one?
Platforms cache the preview from the first time they saw the link. Fixing the tags does not clear that cache. Use the platform's own debugger (Facebook Sharing Debugger, LinkedIn Post Inspector) or change the image URL, for example with a version query parameter.
What is the right og:image size?
1200x630 pixels (about 1.91:1), served over https from an absolute URL, as PNG or JPEG, ideally under 300 KB. Keep the important text in the middle of the frame because some clients crop the edges.
Does the checker need an account or a key?
No. It is free and open to every visitor. The optional editor link below the report carries the title and description over so you can build a replacement card.
